Welcome to Nursery!

Welcome to the class page for Nursery
At Stockton Wood, we Lay the Foundations for Life.

Nursery Staff:
Nursery Teacher/EYFS Lead: Mrs Ritchie
Nursery Nurse: Mrs Sefton
Information for Parents
Stockton Wood is a Restorative School. In Nursery, we use emojis to
check-in to share how we are feeling and this helps us to manage our
feelings.
The children will be learning through play and listening to stories by new
authors, exploring the world around them through a range of exciting topics
and learning outdoors. They will also be making new friends and becoming
independent confident learners.
In Nursery, we begin our PSHE journey through SCARF. This teaches us
about how to stay safe, how to care for others, achievements, resilience
and friendships. This underpins our curriculum and supports positive
behaviour. We use kind hands, kind feet, and kind words at all times. We
do Good sitting, Good looking and Good listening.
We recognise that speech and language not only aids communication, but
is also the first step to achieving their very best in their learning and
development. We use WellComm assessment and intervention tools to
support the children in their communication and language development.
Nursery Intake
Children can attend our Nursery from the term following their third birthday.
We have three intakes throughout the year:

- September (for children that have turned 3 on or before 31st August)
- January (for children that have turned 3 on or before 31st December)
- April (for children that have turned 3 on or before 31st March)
Please fill an application form in as soon as possible to secure your child’s
place. Forms can be collected from our school office.
General Reminders
Please take time to encourage and develop your child’s independence at
home. Encourage using the toilet, correct hand washing/drying and also
putting on and taking off their coat.
Having a place in our Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place
here. Reception applications must be made via Liverpool City Council
Admissions.

Sorting by size
The children are getting really good at sorting, and today we had to sort by size! We started by talking about the sizes we could see – both big and small, but today there was also another option…medium sized!

Stay and Learn – DT week/maths
Thank you to all our families that were able to attend our stay and learn today! The children always enjoy welcoming you into our classroom. Our stay and learn today was all about DT week – the children had to think really carefully about the resources available to them and design and build a trap for the gingerbread man! We had to think about the sizes of the boxes, and choose things that were the right size for our model – some things were too big, some things were too small. We talked about the materials we could use to connect them – wet glue, glue sticks, cello tape, strong wide brown tape, masking tape or even string! Lots of opportunities for discussion and new vocabulary. Thanks again to all our families – we can’t wait to invite you in again soon!

Maths Party Day 🥳

We are having a brilliant day celebrating maths party day 🎉 we started our morning off with some number songs – our dance moves were just as amazing as our counting! We then got on board the maths train, and made a pattern. We talked about the different colours taking turns to make sure the pattern was correct.
36
Pumpkin soup 🎃

The children have really enjoyed learning more about autumn and Halloween 🎃 👻 This week, we have read the story Pumpkin Soup, and then made our very own! We helped Mrs Sefton hollow out the pumpkin, and then she carefully carved a spooky face into it. We then weighed and chopped the potatoes and pumpkin and Mrs Sefton cooked it before blending it into a delicious soup 😋
37
Autumn colour drop

We built an autumn tree using sticks and branches, and then created our own autumnal leaves by dropping different colours onto our cotton pad leaves! The children made links to our autumn walk, and discussed the different colours we could use. We found it tricky to draw the coloured water up into the pipettes but with some practise, we did it!
26
Sensory play

We really enjoyed exploring this tuff tray…even if it did make our hands very red 😅 we used some amazing vocabulary to describe it such as slimy, wet, cold, gooey, squishy, sticky and sloppy!
19
Diwali – Rangoli Patterns
We have been learning about the festival of Diwali! The children independently made some of their own Rangoli patterns on the carpet using our magnetic shapes 🥰

Road Safety/Black History Month
Did you know that traffic lights were invented by Garrett Morgan? Well, Nursery do! Today, we talked about how traffic lights help to keep us and drivers safe on our roads – J even said he is like a superhero for stopping cars from crashing as we talked about traffic lights giving cars each a turn to move safely. We had a talk about how to stay safe on roads when in a car, and how to cross the road safely.

Learning what makes us special
Today, we read a story called ‘Hey you!’ by Dapo Adeola. This is a story about hope and dreams – we can dream anything, and we can be anything. It’s full of positive affirmations which we loved repeating. We talked about all the different attributes that make us special, including our skin colour. #blackhistorymonth

Learning how to match

Following on from colour recognition, we have been learning about how to match. We found out that if two things are the same, they match. We looked at our shoes, and how our shoes match each other, but they may not match our friends shoes; they could be different sizes, colour, shape, pattern, design etc. Even after our lesson, our friends H and B found balls outside that matched by colour!
62
Making our own sandwiches

This week, we enjoyed building our own sandwiches! We talked about the health and hygiene aspect of handling food, and made sure we thoroughly washed our hands. We carefully spread the butter, then had to choose between chicken or cheese for our filling…and then our favourite bit…time to eat!
60
Hello Yellow!

On Friday, we enjoyed recognising Hello Yellow day and what it means. First, we made a link with our current maths learning of colour, so we went on a hunt to find things that are yellow! We enjoyed some lovely relaxation afterwards 🥰❤️

Learning about Autumn

Following our Autumn walk, we collected lots of Autumn treasure 🍂 we spent some time talking about what we found, and learning new words like conker, acorn and pine cone. We read some beautiful Autumn poems and talked about the rhyming words that we could hear. We then used magnifying glasses to explore our Autumn treasures.
62
The colour of us

We read ‘The Colour of Us’ today as part of our PSHE lesson, which linked really well with our learning of Black History Month. We spent some time looking at our own face in the mirror and talking about what we could see. We talked about the ‘skin colour rainbow’ in the book and added our own hands to the rainbow. Did you know that every persons skin colour is unique to them?! That’s part of what makes us special 🥰
102
Space Week

This week is Space Week! So we spent some time reading the story ‘Look Up’, about a little girl who loves all things space. We used our binoculars and telescopes to “look up” just like she did. We talked about some of the things we might see in Space, and talked about some of the people that had been to space in real life. Did you know, Mae Jemison was the first African American woman to travel into space?! #blackhistorymonth #spaceweek

Learning about Autumn

We went for a lovely walk around our school grounds to look at the signs of Autumn. We noticed how the leaves are changing colour and starting to fall. We even had a little shake of a branch and watching some loose leaves fall! We used an information book to help us identify some things that we had found.
67
Making cheese scones
We carefully measured and weighed out the ingredients and made our own scone. We had to wait a while for them to cook and cool, before enjoying our scone for our snack!

Tracing maps

We’ve loved dancing to the tracing map videos! Activities like this help us to cross our midline. Our scarves looked amazing waving around the classroom too!
63
Making marks in foam

Sorry about the mess…we were too busy building our muscles and making different marks in the foam!
65
Making snips with scissors

In our strong hands carousel, we used scissors to make snips in some of the leaves we collected from the garden. The children noticed that the leaves were a bit trickier to cut than the paper, and we chatted about how the leaves felt different to the paper.
62
Watching how water travels

When tidying up, we noticed that the water was travelling down the gulley into the grid! We could see all the tiny pieces of dirt and dust travelling quickly towards the grid – it was fascinating to watch. We noticed there was a blockage in the drain, and H said “if we get it out, the water will go faster!” So we used some tools, removed the blockage and…H was right! It did move faster!
141
Obstacle course

Our obstacle course had a pattern today…up, down, up, down! Movements like this help to develop our core muscles and gross motor skills!
63
Making our own cereal snack!

We were so excited when we found out what our activity was…we could make our own cereal snack! We had to choose which cereal we wanted, and then scoop it into our bowl. We talked about what a full bowl might look like, and aimed to get our bowl about half full. We then had to carefully pour our milk…a couple of small spillages later and we were able to enjoy eating our cereal! We even got to wash our own dishes afterwards!

The colour blue

In maths, we have been learning about colours! Each day, we meet a new colour monster, and they give us a challenge! Blue gave us the challenge to find something blue that we are wearing!

School Council – Community space
Our school council have been busy helping to shape a local woodland space. One of the many things we suggested were animal carvings to make it a welcoming and creative place for the whole community to enjoy!
Remember to look out for them around All Saints Church, as the area is further developed.

School Council – Competition
School council met yesterday to launch a competition to design a logo for the Cradle to Career Project in Speke.
The Cradle to Career Project would appreciate your involvement and there will be a £40 Cineworld voucher for the winning entry (other local schools are also taking part).
Your child will need to hand in their entries to their teacher, by Friday 10th October.

Tapestry
Good morning! We are still experiencing issues with uploading photographs to Chatter. We will keep trying to find a solution, but in the meantime, all accounts have now been set up on Tapestry! So please check Tapestry for updates and photographs 🥰

Happy morning
We are so proud of how the children have settled for their very first full day in Nursery 😍 we have lots of photos of smiley faces to share, but unfortunately we are currently experiencing technical difficulties when sharing photos 😔 we will share them as soon as possible.

Thank You!
What a lovely year we have had! We hope you have an amazing summer making lovely memories! See you in September 🥰

Visiting the park before it gets too hot! 😎
We made a quick dash to the park this morning before it gets too hot later! Poor Mrs Sefton’s heart was in her mouth as we got even braver on the trim trail! We are learning how to stop and assess risk when it feels too tricky or scary.

Making lemon cheesecake pie!

In big cook little cook, we made delicious lemon cheesecake pie! Mrs Sefton made us close our eyes so we could use our sense of smell to guess which fruit we would be using! Nice try Mrs Sefton, you couldn’t trick us! 🍋
512
Phonics

We played a great game this morning – we looked t a picture and had to listen to the sound we could hear at the beginning of the word, then we had to put the picture on top of the letter it begins with! It was tricky, but we did it so well!
266
Visiting Reception again!
We crept through Reception classrooms to have a little explore of their outdoor environment on our own. We had lots of fun before our Reception friends came to join us 🥰

Understanding positional language
We are learning about positional language. This game is a great way for us practise! We have to look really careful at the pictures and listen to the position of the objects.

Making wraps!
Yesterday, we made our own wraps at snack time! We named smelt the ingredients first, and talked about whether we had already tried them before. We had the chance to taste each ingredient before deciding whether we would like them on our wrap. And then the fun part…we had to make our wrap! It was trickier than we expected 😉

Reading for pleasure
Every Thursday, we bring our book bags into school and choose a new book to share with our family ❤️

Threading pasta
We are warming our hands up this morning and threading some pasta! A suggested we can tie them to make necklaces! This is great to help make our fingers stronger, especially as some of us will be going to Reception soon!

Aspirations Week
This week we have been thinking about all of the amazing things we can do when we grow up. On Monday, we were able to come to school dressed as something that we think we’d like to be when we are bigger! We had some doctors, nurses, an explorer, police officers, fire fighters…we had such a lovely day talking about the important jobs.

Cloud dough
We have had so much fun making our own cloud dough today! F said it felt like slime! It’s really stretchy, and smells amazing 🤩 it has definitely helped to wake up our hand muscles today!

Transition
Today, we took advantage of our Reception classrooms being empty, and went over to have a little explore and a story in each of the rooms. Not all of our children will be moving up, but it’s lovely for all children to be involved in this ❤️

Making marks, making mess…and making memories!

The children absolutely LOVED getting messy today, and practised making marks in the foam. It seemed to get into all sorts of places, including on some of our faces! Our Nursery smelt amazing afterwards 🥰

Well-being yoga
We started our morning with some lovely yoga! It’s trickier than it looks!

We are enjoying our well-being activities this week. Today, we sat in the cool shade to listen to our chosen story for the day. This was a wonderful idea from one of our children ❤️

Big cook, little cook
Mrs Sefton made us smile today…we walked into Nursery and spotted the scales and baking ingredients and we knew straight away it was time for big cook, little cook! We weighed all the ingredients, and carefully mixed them together to make lemon tarts! We enjoyed eating them at snack time.

Watching the crane!

We were so excited when we spotted the crane from our garden! The children used words to describe the size of the crane (huge, gigantic, enormous) and we took turns in talking about what we thought the crane might be doing.
834
Blossom fun
We noticed that the trees had blossomed over Easter half term! We had so much fun exploring the blossom that had already fallen…and the blossom that was ready to fall 😉

Tasting pancakes
We tasted some pancakes and some toppings today! They were absolutely delicious 😋 happy Pancake Tuesday!

Big cook, little cook
Today we made shortbread biscuits! We weighed the ingredients, and mixed them together. Once they were ready, we let them cool…but they didn’t last much longer than that! 😋

Visit to ‘the park’
We enjoyed visiting the new ‘park’ today! We conquered some fears (because crossing a wobbly bridge is much scarier than it looks sometimes!), and used our core muscles to help us keep our balance. We had 2 children who initially wouldn’t cross the bridge, but with some encouragement, they not only did it with help, but they then did it all by themselves! We create safe opportunities for children to take risk 🥰

Valentine’s hugs
Today, we talked about how Valentine’s Day is all about love and friendship. We talked about all the people we love, and spoke about ways we can express our love to our family and friends. Lots of children suggested hugs, so that’s exactly what we did! How better to spread joy than to paint each other a picture, and give each other a cuddle…then our paintings will match! True friendship ❤️🥰

Stay and Learn
Thank you to all our families who joined us for stay and learn this morning! It was a huge success and the children really love welcoming their families into their classroom. We made our own dough, made some porridge and tasted it just like Goldilocks, cutting and sticking, and fine motor activities. The children really enjoyed it and we hope you did too 🥰

Staying safe, indoors and outdoors
Last week, we talked about how we stay safe both indoors and outdoors. The children were fantastic – they knew straight away that we must follow rules to stay safe. The children were able to confidently talk about the rules we have in nursery to keep our classroom safe and happy, so we moved outside. We looked at the road, and talked about some of the dangers we might come across and how we can keep ourselves safe.

Big Cook, Little Cook
Have a look at our ingredients…what do you think is on the menu today? We had to listen really carefully to Mrs Sefton as she told us the steps of the recipe…

What is safe to go into my body?
Last week, we talked about what was safe to go onto our bodies such as sun cream, soap, plasters. Building on our learning, this week we talked about what is safe to go into our bodies. We talked about medicine and how this is only safe when it is given to us by a trusted grown up. We also looked at vitamins and at first, we thought they were sweets! Vitamins and medicines come in special bottles and tubs with lids that we can’t do to make sure we don’t have too much.

Chinese New Year
This morning, we have started our Chinese New Year Celebrations! We talked about all the special things that are done during this festival, and we found out the red is a special colour: it brings good luck! We used our fine motor skills to thread gold ribbon through our own red envelope and added a special coin 😋

We have been familiarising ourselves with our new driver text Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and learning lots of new vocabulary. Today, Octopus Opener helped us to sequence the events from the beginning of the story.

Subitising 3
Did you know…we can now subitise 3! This means, if we see 3 objects together, we no longer need to count them! We know there are 3 objects just by making links and noticing patterns.

Big cook, little cook
This morning, we have made our own sausage rolls! We brushed the milk onto the pastry, and rolled the sausage up! We can’t wait to eat them at snack time!
