Information for Parents
Stockton Wood is a Restorative School. In Year 4 we use emojis to check-in to share how we are feeling and this helps us to manage our feelings.
The children are looking forward to a great year of learning, including listening to stories by new authors, learning outdoors, exploring the world around them as scientists and being physically active.
Class Dojos are used to celebrate achievements and praise efforts!

General Reminders
Reading is at the heart of everything we do, so please try and read with your
child every night. Ask them questions about what they have read, encouraging them to talk about the book, whether it is a story or non-fiction. This will help them with their reading comprehension.
Reading books can be changed as soon as your child has completed their book.
Your child can bring a water bottle to school, containing water only.

Coding with Everton in the community



This morning, the children were learning how to code to instruct a robot to score goals.

Here are our final pieces, we used our watercolours skills to create beautiful fish.

Digestive System

We created the digestive system, using water for salvia, a masher as teeth, a bag as the stomach, vinegar as stomach acid and tights as intestines.

On Monday we started art week by using watercolours to mix secondary and tertiary colours.

Cricket
During today’s PE lesson, Year 4 focused on developing the fundamental skills of cricket.



ART WEEK
Year 4 used their knowledge of primary colours to complete the first Art lesson of the week.



Quidditch
Year 4 had a fantastic time taking part in a quidditch tournament on Friday.




Binary Pixel Art


This week in Computing we have been learning about binary and how we can use that to create pixel art.

Science – teeth / egg experiment

This week we have been learning about teeth. We did an experiment to see how different drinks affect our teeth. We used eggs as their shells are similar to enamel.

Aspirations Week – A Life in Football
Years 3, 4 and 5 really enjoyed hearing Mr Jones talking about a range of different careers there are in Football. It was really interesting to hear about how hard he worked to be a professional footballer!



Refugee week
Our assembly today was about raising awareness of what it means to be a refugee – Community is a superpower!
Many countries have many people that are forced to flee for their safety.
One of our children ended assembly with her own thoughts on being a community – “People are getting used to being around different types of people and the world is a colourful place!”






Aspirations Week!
In assembly, we discussed what it means to have aspirations.
We had the chance to dress up in the role that we aspire to be when we are older.

‘What does it mean to be charitable?’
Year 4 discussed the importance of being charitable. We researched different charities and the important work they do.

Year 4 have been discussing big changes in our life and how they make us feel.

As part of our lifesavers we have been discussing different charities. The children then chose one to research.

Atlas work
Today, 4D were geographers. We used our atlas skills to find and label famous UK rivers.



KS2 Author visit – Luke Temple
Luke shared his fantastic adventure stories with us this morning. The main character is called Felix Dashwood and Luke helped us to bring the characters to life and explore the problems that they come across.
We had a chance to ask Luke some great questions and see how the illustrator brings his characters to life too!
Signed books about Felix’s adventures and the characters she meets on her way, will be on sale in school tomorrow!





Author visit
Year 4 had an amazing visit from the fabulous author Luke Temple. Autographed books will be available to buy from school tomorrow.



Pixel Art

A great first lesson of our new unit, the children did a great job designing pixel art using pen and paper.

Year 4 Music


Today we listened to ‘You can see it through’, the children couldn’t stop dancing to the electronic dance music. We then played along on the glockenspiels.

First Aid

Sheila came to speak to both year 4 classes this afternoon about her role as a first aider. She discussed the training she has received and how she would deal with an emergency.

PSHE ~ Communities


Today we had a good discussion about all the different communities we belong to. When then thought about the Stockton Wood school community and thought about all the different communities we people that help us.

DATA COLLECTION
We collected data on what plants and animals are in our local area. We used our data to create tally charts, pictograms and bar charts.

Researching Anglo-Saxons
We have been learning about Anglo-Saxon’s beliefs. We used our web search skills from our computing lessons to guide our research. It helped us find accurate and reliable information.



Year 4 Sports Day


Excellent work today Year 4! Everyone tried their best in their races and events. Thank you to all the parents that came to watch.

Year 4 came and shared their picnic with us! They worked very hard and reception enjoyed their food. Thank you Year 4!








CREATING PICNIC
This week in DT, we have researched, planned and made a picnic for our reception classes.
4D really enjoyed putting together their picnic plates, thinking about appearance, texture and taste.

Today we made our picnic. We followed our plan from the other day. We used a range of skills: speak, cut, grate, garnish and mix. We thought about appearance, texture and taste.

Online Safety
In computing, 4D have been learning about the importance of keeping safe online.



Year 4 DT
In Year 4, we are designing and making a picnic for our reception friends. Today we asked them a range of questions to find out what they like and dislike. We then went back to class to design them a perfect picnic.



Mindful
Today in 4C we created appreciation cards. We thought about the people who care for us.


Mindful week


We started our mindful week with a good discussion. We also relaxed to some music with mindful colouring.

4D have been using their dictionary skills to help them understand vocabulary in English.






New computer suite


Thanks Mr Moffat for an excellent computing lesson in our new computer suite. The children were so exciting!

Gospel Music
4D really enjoyed exploring the gospel song ‘ Train is A-Coming’ in today’s music lesson.


HINDU VISITOR
Year 4 had a lovely afternoon with a visit from a local Hindu. We learnt what life is like as a British Hindu and even got to practise some yoga.





The Journey

The first lesson of our new English unit was all about making predictions. The children enjoyed lots of discussion as we collected our ideas, making links to between objects.

Speke Sign Award Ceremony
Well done to our Year 4 children who received an award today for their amazing signs about Speke. We look forward to seeing your signs all around Speke.



Stay and Learn
Thank you to all grown-ups who could make it to Year 4’s Stay and Learn this morning. We loved doing our science experiment with you.



Eid Al Fitr
Today, we looked at the Islamic festival of Eid. We had lots of discussion about the celebration and the type of Islamic art we might see at this time. We, then, had a go at creating our own Islamic patterns.

Today we discussed the Islamic celebration of Eid Al Fitr. Then, we looked aT and discussed Islamic art. Finally we created our own work inspired by Islamic Art.

PSHE DISCUSSIONS
4D discussed how our behaviours can impact how someone feels. We also discussed the importance of not being a passive witness when we see negative behaviour happening.




Wire Trees


Last week, we created wire tree sculptures. We twisted the wire to secure a trunk base, then added branches and beads.

Neurodiversity week
To celebrate Neurodiversity week, 4D have been learning about how we are all different from one another. We have been focusing on dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and ASD.
We especially have been loving our colourful school.

What a lovely Art lesson in the sun! 4D enjoyed sketching real life objects.



Neurodiversity Celebration Week
A huge thank you to Mr Boyd for hanging our neurodiversity umbrellas! Neurodiversity is an umbrella term used to refer to all of the different ways of thinking. This week the children are learning about Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and Dyspraxia. Ask your child if they know any famous people who are neurodivergant!







This morning we have sketching trees in real life. We’ve been thinking about shape, form, shadow and detail.

This morning we had a really good discussion about dyslexia. We discussed how everyone’s brain works differently, and the strengths and struggles that come with this.

In Year 4, we have started Art Week by experimenting with a range of sketching pencils. We then used a view finder to draw sections of ‘Tiger in a Tropic Storm’.

TECHNOLOGY
We have been learning about STEM in Science Week. Today, we looked at technology. We enjoyed using AI and coding to make our robots talk.




SCIENCE WEEK
Year 4 have been loving Science week🔬
So far, we have enjoyed a talk from Knowsley safari park.
We also have been investigating how animals adapt to their environment by conducting a blubber experiment.



Blubber Gloves

As part of Science week, we’ve been learning about how penguins have adapted to their environment. Blubber helps them keep warm, we did a taste to see how blubber keeps our hands warm.

This morning Knowsley Safari spoke to use about how our little actions can impact on animals and nature. We discussed how to make more sustainable choices.

Reception had some special visitors this afternoon. Year 4 came down to read some of our favourite stories!

These week we had a group of Key Stage 2 children take part in a Boccia competition.

Special Delivery
Today, we had a special delivery from the with. She has assigned 4D with the task of writing a twisted ending for their favourite fairytale. We can’t wait to get started.



New books

We’ve started 2 news books in 4C. ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy is our vehicle text in English and ‘The Lost thing’ by Shaun Tan is our class reader.

Who helps us?


We have started a new PSHE unit : Rights and respect. We have been discussing how different people help us.

Making Predictions


In English, we’ve been making predictions about our new book. We look at items, read the notes in a jar, listened to an extract and looked closely at illustrations.

LGBT+ Awareness


As part of LGBT+ awareness week, we read a booked called ‘Introducing Teddy’. We discussed the story of gender and friendship. The children wrote letters to Tilly from Errol.

Science – Collecting Data

As part of our science we have collecting data around school of what we could observe. We had 4 categories : vertebrate, invertebrate, flowering plants and non-flowering plants.

After half term, the expectation will be for all children to have their reading book in school every day.

Stay and Learn

School Council meeting
Our school council were busy this morning, thinking of ideas for special rewards for reading at home and also for charities to donate to as part of our Social Impact Schools Award.


Safer Internet Day – Scams
In Year 4 we have been spotting scams. We’ve had lots of good discussions.



Year 4 ~ Stay and learn
Thank you for all the parents that came to join us this morning. Our session’s focus was times tables.



Quiet Place
4D enjoyed giving each other a peer message in our whole class Quiet Place session today.



YEAR 4 DT WEEK
This week, we have been exploring structures in preparation for designing our own desk tidy. Today, we painted our final design. 4D created some very impressive structures.

CO (Carbon Monoxide) safety assembly!
We learnt an important message today about Carbon Monoxide (otherwise known as CO) safety.
You can’t see it, hear it, smell it, taste it or touch it!
Homework task:
- Check if you have a CO alarm in your home!
- Make a note of the signs and symptoms to look out for and also the number to call if you suspect any CO in your home.

Year 4 had an exciting day exploring the Deva Roman Experience. We learnt about life during Roman times and we really enjoyed getting to be a Roman soldier going to battle.

Inclusion at Stockton Wood
Year 4 had a fantastic Circle Time today discussing what inclusion looks like at our school. We used our IQM bear to help guide the conversation and share our ideas. 🐻✨ It’s wonderful to see such thoughtful reflections from our pupils!
