Information for Parents
Stockton Wood is a Restorative School. In Year 1 we use emojis to check-in to share how we are feeling and this helps us to manage our feelings.
The children are looking forward to a great year of learning, including listening to stories by new authors, learning outdoors, exploring the world around them as scientists and being physically active.
Class Dojos are used to celebrate achievements and praise efforts!
Year 1 Timetable

P.E. kit includes: a plain pale blue t-shirt, navy shorts/ jogging bottoms and a pair
of black pumps or trainers to take part in PE. Your child can come to school
wearing their P.E. kit on their class days.
General Reminders
Reading is at the heart of everything we do, so please try and read with your
child every night. Ask them questions about what they have read, encouraging them to talk about the book, whether it is a story or non-fiction. This will help them with their reading comprehension.
Your child can bring a water bottle to school, containing water only.
Look out for our homework matrix! These activities will explore our wider curriculum, offer creative challenges and an opportunity to earn dojos!

Today we finished our photo books all about 🇰🇪 Kenya, the children have really enjoyed this.

We enjoyed going on a ‘fact hunt’ today and learning all about life in Kenya. How many facts can you recall?



Year One – Invasion Games
Great sending and receiving skills during PE this week. Good control displayed and good communication skills between partners too.



Happy Faces

A huge thank you to all our families who came to watch our end of year assembly. You must be very proud of all your children have achieved this year. Once we were back in class we enjoyed a cake and biscuit.

Lovely interactive performance this afternoon listening to Alex and Archie playing the violin and accordion.



Croxteth Farm






Yesterday year 1 had a gorgeous day at Croxteth Farm. The children were very well behaved, our day was very busy helping to look after all of the animals. We were able to feed and touch lots of gorgeous animals as well as learn new things. We definitely have a few aspiring vets in year 1.

We’ve throughly enjoyed a fabulous day at Croxteth Farm. We fed lots of hungry animals, groomed the ponies and stroked the bunny rabbits and guinea pigs.


Drama- Aspirations week


Carrie came in to speak about drama on Friday. She brought in props for the children to use and lines for them to act out using expression.

Art Week – Year One
Wonderful start to ‘Art Week’ in Year One. Our focus this week is drawing and we have completed a ‘Draw with Rob’ warm up, explored mark making and produced a lovely sketch of our outdoor area.

Aspirations Week – Year One
We’ve had a great afternoon with our special visitor Carrie. Carrie shared her experience of being an actress and all the fantastic parts that are involved her job. We got to try on some costumes and read some lines aloud.



Wolf Hunt – Year One
There’s a wolf on the loose. Have you seen a wolf? Eyewitness account from Mr Boyd and evidence of scratch marks, a red cloak and a bin bag.







Aspirations Week
Year 1, 2 and 3 are off to a great start to our Aspirations week today. We all got together to talk about what we wanted to be when we grow up.



Year One Writing
Super proud of Year One and their publishing skills. Amazing diary entries all about Erin wanting to save Black Rock!






Author Visit
Such a lovely time today with our visiting Author Luke Temple. We listened carefully to different extracts from three of his books and asked a range of questions. Which book would you like to read in full?








Year One – Maths
Wonderful counting in tens and ones today using a range of practical resources! Good use of 100 squares to record the final answers.




Year One – Science
Great work today by our class monitors looking after our class plant. Making sure it has got enough water and sunlight.



Year One – History
Lovely History lesson today in Year One. We have been comparing photographs of shops in Speke in 1990’s to present day. What did you notice?





Library time





We had a lovely relaxing time in the library sharing stories and reading with friends.

Today we used a paint program to produce work in the style of Piet Mondrian.




Sports Day




Year 1 had a beautiful sports day yesterday in the sunshine. We took part in a running race, egg and spoon, sack and water race. Thank you to all the parents that supported us and were there to cheer us on.

Great use of paint tools during computing this week to create work in the style of Wassily Kandinsky.







Mental Health Week – Year One
Lovely listening to mindfulness music and colouring with our friends to relax and unwind at the end of a busy school day.



Design Technology – Year One
Good research skills displayed in class today. Good discussion work all about the difference between fruit and vegetables. We now know which fruit grows on trees, bushes and vines.




Year One – PSHE
Lovely circle time discussing the food we like and dislike. Good range of healthy food added to packed lunch boxes using the ‘Eat Well’ plate.




Year One – Big Friday Quiz
Wonderful retrieval of prior learning in our Big Friday Quiz today. Well done everyone! Our winning team scored full marks!





PSHE – Year One
Year One has been busy watching and discussing videos from the British Red Cross. We have enjoyed learning about basic first aid.



Making Equal Groups





As a class we grouped 30 counters into equal groups. We could do this in groups of 2,3,5 and 10.

We started today’s lesson by watching a e-safety video. Then we used a QR code get on to a painting tool. We then explored the app and the different tools/icons within it.

We have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the festival of ‘Eid Mubarak’ and have made special cards.

Year One – Celebrating Neurodiversity Week
This week we have been watching a range of video clips and learning about how we are all different. We now know that our brains work differently and is ok to think in a different way to others. Everyone is welcome in Stockton Wood.


Art- clay
Today we were so lucky, we got to work with an artist to make a tile with tress and buildings on. Finally we made our mouse to go on it. We have learnt so many new skills during our lesson and mostly importantly had fun.












Year One – Mathematics
Super skills displayed whilst exploring the mass of objects. Good use of ‘lighter and heavier’ vocabulary when comparing the mass of classroom objects.



Neurodiversity Celebration Week
A huge thank you to Mr Boyd for hanging our neurodiversity umbrellas! Neurodiversity is an umbrella term used to refer to all of the different ways of thinking. This week the children are learning about Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and Dyspraxia. Ask your child if they know any famous people who are neurodivergant!

Year One – RE
We have been retelling the story of Palm Sunday and talking about why it is important to Christians. Look at our lovely Palm leaves.

We are looking at height and length using the language, tall, taller, short, shorter.

Science Week -Year One
Great start to Science week in Year One exploring different types of “beak” tools (tweezers, spoons, straws and chops sticks) to pick up different “food” (rice, gummy worms and marbles.)

We have thoroughly enjoyed sharing and reading a range of books to celebrate World Book Day.

During our PE lesson today we were learning how to move our bodies in different ways. We had to create different letters using our body such as ‘L,I,S,V,O’.

LifeSavers
Its lovely to see our year 1 children saving money each week. Our year 6 cashiers are doing a great job.







Gymnastics
Today in our PE lesson we started gymnastics. We have looked at different ways of moving and travelling. We moved high, low, in different directions and different speeds.




LGBTQ+ week
Today we read the story of ‘Pirate Mums’. As a class we discussed different types of families, we talked about families with 1 mum, 2 mums, a mum and a dad, 1 dad, 2 dads and how we are all different but we are still loved and cared for.


Winter Planting
Today in science we planted some seeds, we are very excited to watch them grow. Today we looked at the words: flower, stem, leaf and roots.







Stay and Learn
Year 1 had a lovely time learning all about the history of St Valentine. We had fun with some Valentines maths problems too! Thank you to all our families for coming along!

We’ve had a fun filled afternoon learning all about the history of St Valentine and used our problem solving skills to solve calculations using numbers up to 20.





Internet Safety – Year One
Excellent internet safety session today learning all about ‘Trusted Adults.’

Today we have been learning how to use a tennis racket 🎾 we had to balance the ball on the racket and get to the other side of the room.

1C worked really hard in maths this morning. We used concrete resources and pictorial representations to calculate near doubles. We will carry on with this learning next week!
