History
History at Stockton Wood is dynamic, stimulating and most of all fun to learn. History is a tool to aid the children to see where they and their society came from. Children will understand that in the past people made many mistakes, and it is our duty as Historians to learn from the past. Children will understand that History is incomplete and much of it is up for debate. The children in Stockton Wood are skilled Historians, using first hand and secondary sources to make comparisons and assess the impact of historical events and civilisations.
Used correctly the children can use their History skills to craft a better world through what they have learned.
Early years
They will understand they and their family are part of a larger community. They will begin to have an awareness of changes over time and significant people who help us in our community. Children will read a number of books that will build a foundation for their knowledge of History.
Key Stage 1
Children will understand their place in history, how events of the past has and is affecting them now. They will study people of interest from before living memory and will explore what ways they influenced how we live now. They will begin to understand that what we do now affects what will come.
Key stage 2
They will compare cultures from different eras and note how things changed and why. They will explore cause and effect. They will recognize that history is not always told accurately and there are many accounts. They will recognize the difference between primary and secondary sources and be able to look for reliable sources of information.
We celebrate historical moments in time. Showing the children History is being made in their lifetime it is not just a thing of the past.

History Chatter
Titanic Zoom
Year 3 enjoyed learning all about the Titanic last week. We talk about where it was built and where it set sail from. We also learnt about morse code!
Remembrance Day
This week in EYFS, we learned all about Remembrance Day. We talked about why we wear poppies and how we remember the brave soldiers who helped to keep us safe. We took part in lots of fun activities, including making our own beautiful poppy garden to help us remember all the soldiers. We also joined together for our minute of silence. It was a very special week of learning, kindness, and remembrance.
Remembrance Day
Nursery paid our respects to the brave soldiers today at 11am. We made our own poppies using our handprints, and talked about what the poppies represented. We will remember them ❤️
Remembrance Day
Today Reception have learnt all about Remembrance Day and the poppy. We have made our own poppy fields to remember all the men and women who have fought in wars to keep us safe.
Using apples, paint and card we printed poppies onto card.
Bonfire Night
This week, we have been learning about Bonfire Night. We watched videos of fireworks and used our voices and bodies to copy their movements and sounds. Then we had fun making our own fireworks picture! The children enjoyed splattering glue and sprinkling glitter, making their fireworks sparkle!

DT Week/Black History Month
Our designer/inventor that we have been learning about is Lonnie Johnson. He invented the nerf gun! We talked about what an inventor is, and how inventors turn their ideas into something real and amazing. We learned a little about Lonnie Johnson, and talked about nerf guns.

Black History Month
We used play dough to create faces, and then used pipe cleaners and google eyes to make a smiley face. We talked about how all our faces are different – different colour hair, different colour skin, different colour eyes too! We read a beautiful book called The Colours of Us.
History
We had a visit from Samuel Pepys in History. He taught us all about the Great Fire of London and helped us to learn about his diary through acting.
Road Safety/Black History Month
Did you know that traffic lights were invented by Garrett Morgan? Well, Nursery do! Today, we talked about how traffic lights help to keep us and drivers safe on our roads – J even said he is like a superhero for stopping cars from crashing as we talked about traffic lights giving cars each a turn to move safely. We had a talk about how to stay safe on roads when in a car, and how to cross the road safely.
Black History Month
Today in Reception we explored how we are different and how we are the same! We looked at our hair colour, eye colour and skin colour. We discussed how even if we look different we are the same inside and we should always be kind to everyone!
Learning what makes us special
Today, we read a story called ‘Hey you!’ by Dapo Adeola. This is a story about hope and dreams – we can dream anything, and we can be anything. It’s full of positive affirmations which we loved repeating. We talked about all the different attributes that make us special, including our skin colour. #blackhistorymonth
Black History Month
Year 5 have learnt about Benjamin Zephaniah this week, a famous poet from Birmingham with Jamaican decent, as part of Black History Month. They also wrote some passionate dub poetry in his style.

In Year 4 we shared a book about Katherine Johnson, they children learnt all about her life and the difficulties she overcame. They created posters celebrating her achievements in Maths and Science.

The colour of us
We read ‘The Colour of Us’ today as part of our PSHE lesson, which linked really well with our learning of Black History Month. We spent some time looking at our own face in the mirror and talking about what we could see. We talked about the ‘skin colour rainbow’ in the book and added our own hands to the rainbow. Did you know that every persons skin colour is unique to them?! That’s part of what makes us special 🥰

Samuel Pepys Visits Year 2!
Year 2 had a visit from Samuel Pepys for a fantastic workshop on the Great Fire of London! 2P showed off their historical knowledge and played some excellent team games.
Space Week
This week is Space Week! So we spent some time reading the story ‘Look Up’, about a little girl who loves all things space. We used our binoculars and telescopes to “look up” just like she did. We talked about some of the things we might see in Space, and talked about some of the people that had been to space in real life. Did you know, Mae Jemison was the first African American woman to travel into space?! #blackhistorymonth #spaceweek

Black History Month
Year 3 had an assembly on Black History Month this morning. We learned about key figures who paved the way for positive changes in society and discussed who is there to support us and on our team.
Year 6 History
The children are enjoying learning about World War2! We love the tin hat!
Cave Drawing
Today, 3M kickstarted their History topic (The Stone Age) by creating their very own cave drawings.
Y2 computing
We combined text and graphics today to share information about our History learning. We enjoyed retrieving facts about Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale.
Year One – History
Lovely History lesson today in Year One. We have been comparing photographs of shops in Speke in 1990’s to present day. What did you notice?
Researching Anglo-Saxons
We have been learning about Anglo-Saxon’s beliefs. We used our web search skills from our computing lessons to guide our research. It helped us find accurate and reliable information.

Jack brought in the time capsule that he made in Y4. It was great to open it and see what was inside!

Y2 History
To start our new history topic, we learned about Mary Seacole and even made remedies using ingredients to role play helping the sick and injured soldiers.
Year 2 History
This week we started learning about the famous nurse Mary Seacole! We learnt that she made remedies for the soldiers fighting in the war, so we made our own remedies.
Year 3- World Museum Trip
Year 3 had a wonderful time at the World Museum. We enjoyed looking around the Ancient Egyptian exhibition and finding artefacts that we have learned about. We also enjoyed the workshop where we completed activities about Ancient Egypt.
Year 6- Should we be proud of Liverpool’s past?
6B used a range of sources from the Slave Trade (both Primary and Secondary) to decide whether or not we should be proud of Liverpool’s history and it’s link with the Triangular Trading system.
Stay and Learn
Year 1 had a lovely time learning all about the history of St Valentine. We had fun with some Valentines maths problems too! Thank you to all our families for coming along!

We’ve had a fun filled afternoon learning all about the history of St Valentine and used our problem solving skills to solve calculations using numbers up to 20.
Year 6 History
Year 6 identified the difference between Primary and Secondary sources during our history lesson this week. The sources were about the Slave Trade and the impact it had on people’s lives.
YEAR 4 ROMAN TRIP
Year 4 had an exciting day exploring the Deva Roman Experience. We learnt about life during Roman times and we really enjoyed getting to be a Roman soldier going to battle.
Year 4 ~ History : DEVA Chester
Today, Year 4 had an exciting day in Chester. We learnt all about life in the Roman times and we even got to be a Roman soldier for the afternoon!
