Information for Parents
Stockton Wood is a Restorative School. In Year 4 we use emojis to check-in to share how we are feeling and this helps us to manage our feelings.
The children are looking forward to a great year of learning, including listening to stories by new authors, learning outdoors, exploring the world around them as scientists and being physically active.
Class Dojos are used to celebrate achievements and praise efforts!

General Reminders
Reading is at the heart of everything we do, so please try and read with your
child every night. Ask them questions about what they have read, encouraging them to talk about the book, whether it is a story or non-fiction. This will help them with their reading comprehension.
Reading books can be changed as soon as your child has completed their book.
Your child can bring a water bottle to school, containing water only.

Maths Party Day Winner.
Well done to our Year 4 pupil for winning Liverpool’s Maths Party Day competition! Her entry has been transformed into a Rubex cube artwork by the talented artist Fai, who presented it to her in assembly today.
Choir
On Friday, our choir visited Liverpool John Lennon Airport. We raised £217.91 which will go towards improving our outdoor play!
Christmas Fun
4D are enjoying discovering what the elf has been up to each night. Well done to the Year 4 children who found the golden tickets hidden by the elf and enjoyed a chocolate treat.

Sketching in Church
This morning, all of Year 4 went to visit All Saints church. We learnt all about the symbols used in a a church. We then had some time sketching: the stain glass window, the cross, nativity, cup and bowl and nativity candle.

Researching Arctic Mammals
Year 4 are preparing to write an information report on Arctic mammals. Today, we used different articles to gather facts about polar bears.

Silent Night
We are getting into the festive spirit in our music lessons 🎄🎅🏻 Year 4 have started learning how to play Silent Night on the keyboards.
Building arrays
Year 4 have been using cubes and counters to build arrays to help us understand our times tables.
Cricket
Year 4 have been enjoying the cricket sessions with Mr White. This week we have been focusing on our batting skills.

Anti-Bullying Week
Year 4 had a lovely morning working with Altru for Anti-Bullying Week. We watched an amazing play and had a workshop focusing on the importance of using our power for good.
9 times tables
In maths, Year 4 have been learning their 9 times tables. Today, we looked at the patterns and different ways to work out the 9 times tables.
All Saints Woodland Trail
A Year 4 child has been involved in planning, designing and creating the new All Saints Woodland trail.

Year 4 have been practising their 6 times tables in maths. Today, they used counters and cubes to build arrays that helped them work out their times-table questions.

Oobleck Science Experiment
In science, we have been learning about states of matter. Today, we had lots of fun using oobleck to understand that objects can change state.
Similar and different ~ PSHE
Today we discussed how we value difference. We talked about how we could be the same but different from our friends.

What would I do?
Today in PSHE, we looked at how everyone is similar but we also have lots of differences. We discussed how we react to different situations but how we respond is very important. We had a lovely discussion about the importance of an effective apology.

Arrays
Today Year 4 have been creating arrays using counters and cubes. We could build different times table facts and thought about the related repeated addition facts.

Compromises
In PSHE, we have been discussing compromises. We had a lovely discussion of why we should compromise and what makes a good compromise? Year 4 had some fabulous answers of how we could deal with different scenarios.
Using scratch
4D had a great computing lesson learning how to use scratch to create loops with Mr Moffat.
DT WEEK
4D have spent the week exploring circuits and designing structures. We finished the week creating our very own light up lighthouses 💡
Stay and Learn
Thank you to all the parents who were able to join us for stay and learn. We loved sharing what we have learned in our maths lesson this year.

Maths Party Day
Year 4 have had a lovely morning celebrating maths party day. 4D used the skill of scaling to design a train station. We really enjoyed our zoom our maths party day zoom, learning how we can use maths in art. It has been lovely to see everyone dressed up in their numbers. 🔢
Hockey
In this weeks PE lesson, Year 4 put their hockey skills to the test in a mini tournament.
Changing Feelings
In PSHE we have been discussing changing feelings. Sometimes this happens, but why? How do we feel about the change? We watched the trailer of the film ‘Wonder’ to discuss how some children’s feelings changed.

Black History Month
In Year 4 we shared a book about Katherine Johnson, they children learnt all about her life and the difficulties she overcame. They created posters celebrating her achievements in Maths and Science.
Place Value
We have been using place value charts and counters to help with addition and subtraction.

School Council – Community space
Our school council have been busy helping to shape a local woodland space. One of the many things we suggested were animal carvings to make it a welcoming and creative place for the whole community to enjoy!
Remember to look out for them around All Saints Church, as the area is further developed.
School Council – Competition
School council met yesterday to launch a competition to design a logo for the Cradle to Career Project in Speke.
The Cradle to Career Project would appreciate your involvement and there will be a £40 Cineworld voucher for the winning entry (other local schools are also taking part).
Your child will need to hand in their entries to their teacher, by Friday 10th October.

Following on from our assembly theme of ‘Peace’, in our collective workshop time we have been creating posters about peace means to us.

School Council
Stockton Wood School Council were announced this morning in assembly. Congratulations to these children (the rest are to follow tomorrow).
Also, we like to say a huge well done to those that prepared a speech and put themselves forward for the role this year – the number of votes were very close.

Branching Databases
In computing lessons, 4D have been using JIT5 software to create branching databases.

The children worked really hard this afternoon drawing self portraits, they thought about line, proportion and detail.

Year 4 End of Year Trip
Year 4 had a great day at Martin Mere for their end of year trip. We explored the wet land, saw lots of different and animals and went pond dipping.

We created the digestive system, using water for salvia, a masher as teeth, a bag as the stomach, vinegar as stomach acid and tights as intestines.

During today’s PE lesson, Year 4 focused on developing the fundamental skills of cricket.

This week in Computing we have been learning about binary and how we can use that to create pixel art.

This week we have been learning about teeth. We did an experiment to see how different drinks affect our teeth. We used eggs as their shells are similar to enamel.

Aspirations Week – A Life in Football
Years 3, 4 and 5 really enjoyed hearing Mr Jones talking about a range of different careers there are in Football. It was really interesting to hear about how hard he worked to be a professional footballer!
Refugee week
Our assembly today was about raising awareness of what it means to be a refugee – Community is a superpower!
Many countries have many people that are forced to flee for their safety.
One of our children ended assembly with her own thoughts on being a community – “People are getting used to being around different types of people and the world is a colourful place!”
Aspirations Week!
In assembly, we discussed what it means to have aspirations.
We had the chance to dress up in the role that we aspire to be when we are older.

‘What does it mean to be charitable?’
Year 4 discussed the importance of being charitable. We researched different charities and the important work they do.

Year 4 have been discussing big changes in our life and how they make us feel.

As part of our lifesavers we have been discussing different charities. The children then chose one to research.

Atlas work
Today, 4D were geographers. We used our atlas skills to find and label famous UK rivers.
KS2 Author visit – Luke Temple
Luke shared his fantastic adventure stories with us this morning. The main character is called Felix Dashwood and Luke helped us to bring the characters to life and explore the problems that they come across.
We had a chance to ask Luke some great questions and see how the illustrator brings his characters to life too!
Signed books about Felix’s adventures and the characters she meets on her way, will be on sale in school tomorrow!
Author visit
Year 4 had an amazing visit from the fabulous author Luke Temple. Autographed books will be available to buy from school tomorrow.
Pixel Art
A great first lesson of our new unit, the children did a great job designing pixel art using pen and paper.

Today we listened to ‘You can see it through’, the children couldn’t stop dancing to the electronic dance music. We then played along on the glockenspiels.

First Aid
Sheila came to speak to both year 4 classes this afternoon about her role as a first aider. She discussed the training she has received and how she would deal with an emergency.

Today we had a good discussion about all the different communities we belong to. When then thought about the Stockton Wood school community and thought about all the different communities we people that help us.

We collected data on what plants and animals are in our local area. We used our data to create tally charts, pictograms and bar charts.

Today in 4C we created appreciation cards. We thought about the people who care for us.

We started our mindful week with a good discussion. We also relaxed to some music with mindful colouring.

HINDU VISITOR
Year 4 had a lovely afternoon with a visit from a local Hindu. We learnt what life is like as a British Hindu and even got to practise some yoga.
The Journey
The first lesson of our new English unit was all about making predictions. The children enjoyed lots of discussion as we collected our ideas, making links to between objects.

Eid Al Fitr
Today, we looked at the Islamic festival of Eid. We had lots of discussion about the celebration and the type of Islamic art we might see at this time. We, then, had a go at creating our own Islamic patterns.

PSHE DISCUSSIONS
4D discussed how our behaviours can impact how someone feels. We also discussed the importance of not being a passive witness when we see negative behaviour happening.
Wire Trees
Last week, we created wire tree sculptures. We twisted the wire to secure a trunk base, then added branches and beads.

Neurodiversity week
To celebrate Neurodiversity week, 4D have been learning about how we are all different from one another. We have been focusing on dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and ASD.
We especially have been loving our colourful school.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week
A huge thank you to Mr Boyd for hanging our neurodiversity umbrellas! Neurodiversity is an umbrella term used to refer to all of the different ways of thinking. This week the children are learning about Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and Dyspraxia. Ask your child if they know any famous people who are neurodivergant!
This morning we have sketching trees in real life. We’ve been thinking about shape, form, shadow and detail.

This morning we had a really good discussion about dyslexia. We discussed how everyone’s brain works differently, and the strengths and struggles that come with this.

In Year 4, we have started Art Week by experimenting with a range of sketching pencils. We then used a view finder to draw sections of ‘Tiger in a Tropic Storm’.

We have been learning about STEM in Science Week. Today, we looked at technology. We enjoyed using AI and coding to make our robots talk.

Year 4 have been loving Science week🔬

We also have been investigating how animals adapt to their environment by conducting a blubber experiment.

As part of Science week, we’ve been learning about how penguins have adapted to their environment. Blubber helps them keep warm, we did a taste to see how blubber keeps our hands warm.

We’ve started 2 news books in 4C. ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy is our vehicle text in English and ‘The Lost thing’ by Shaun Tan is our class reader.

In English, we’ve been making predictions about our new book. We look at items, read the notes in a jar, listened to an extract and looked closely at illustrations.

LGBT+ Awareness
As part of LGBT+ awareness week, we read a booked called ‘Introducing Teddy’. We discussed the story of gender and friendship. The children wrote letters to Tilly from Errol.

As part of our science we have collecting data around school of what we could observe. We had 4 categories : vertebrate, invertebrate, flowering plants and non-flowering plants.

Our school council were busy this morning, thinking of ideas for special rewards for reading at home and also for charities to donate to as part of our Social Impact Schools Award.

YEAR 4 DT WEEK
This week, we have been exploring structures in preparation for designing our own desk tidy. Today, we painted our final design. 4D created some very impressive structures.
CO (Carbon Monoxide) safety assembly!
We learnt an important message today about Carbon Monoxide (otherwise known as CO) safety.
You can’t see it, hear it, smell it, taste it or touch it!

Year 4 had an exciting day exploring the Deva Roman Experience. We learnt about life during Roman times and we really enjoyed getting to be a Roman soldier going to battle.
