Maths

At Stockton Wood, we believe that Mathematics is a fundamental skill that is essential for everyday life and the foundation for future academic success. We strive to create a positive learning environment where all children feel confident and empowered to engage with mathematical concepts while developing critical thinking skills.
In the Nursery, we implement the Master the Curriculum programme, which focuses on embedding early mathematical concepts through play and exploration. This structured approach ensures a smooth transition to the more formal Maths curriculum in Reception and beyond.
From Reception to Year 6, we implement the White Rose scheme of learning, which provides a cohesive and progressive approach to Maths education. This scheme facilitates consistent planning, assessment, and teaching methodologies that align with the National Curriculum expectations. Each unit is designed with a focus on varying the depth of learning and enabling pupils to demonstrate mastery in their understanding.
In addition to the main curriculum, we utilise “Fluent in Five” from Year 1 to Year 6. This separate fluency session promotes daily practice of essential number facts and skills, helping pupils to develop speed and accuracy in mathematical reasoning. Fluent in Five provides a daily set of arithmetic questions, designed to help children develop and maintain fluency in both written and mental calculations.

Finding factors
Year 5 have been using concrete resources to build arrays and explore factors! 🧮✨
There was some fabulous mathematical thinking, teamwork and discussion as the children investigated how numbers can be arranged into different arrays to identify their factors.

Maths Party Day 🧮🔢
We had so much fun celebrating Maths Party Day! The children explored different 2D shapes and used their creativity to design and create their own pictures through art. The children thought carefully about the shapes that they were using, recognising and combining them to make wonderful pictures!😊

5D – Maths party day!
Last Friday, we celebrated maths party day! In year 5, we created pixel art and calculated the size of our drawings using cm’s. We created some fantastic pieces! Well done year 5! ✍️🤩

Maths Party Day – Patterns 🔴🔵🔴🔵
Today, we had lots of fun completing a range of maths activities based around patterns! We explored our learning in different ways and even took it outside, where we had great fun taking part in obstacle relays. What a fun-filled day of learning! 😊

Science meets Maths!
Year 4 used their data handling skills to organise and explore their Welly Walk findings, classifying vertebrates, invertebrates, flowering and non-flowering plants and making cross-curricular connections with Maths.

Science – Data Handling
Year 4 became scientists as we explored our school grounds on a welly walk! We looked for examples of vertebrates, invertebrates, flowering plants and non-flowering plants, recording our findings using a tally chart.
We will use our collected data to create graphs and present our findings, helping us to compare the living things we discovered and develop our data-handling skills.
Will our findings be different in Spring? Why?

Year 6 Maths Party Day
Year 6 looked at Maths and Art in real life and created tessellations!

Maths Party Day – Year Four
We had lots of fun using mirrors and exploring symmetry. We completed a range of lovely independent activities and challenged our partners to complete symmetrical tasks too.

Maths Party Day🔢
We celebrated the link between art and maths by designing our very own robots using 2D shapes! We explored the area and perimeter of the different shapes while getting creative with our designs.
The children created some fantastic and imaginative robots, showing off their creativity and mathematical skills. Well done, everyone!

Life Savers Big Question 1: Where does our money come from?

We thought really carefully about our first LifeSavers question of the year. And as you can see, we had so we fantastic answers!

Maths Party Day! 🥳

We loved maths party day. We created art through the use of shape! We used a variety of different shapes, in all different sizes, and created our own pictures! How fabulous!

Maths- Find a part
Our Year 1 children enjoyed a practical maths lesson exploring how to find a missing part! 🧮 They used hands-on resources to solve number problems, investigating how two parts combine to make a whole. The children had lots of fun developing their number skills and explaining their mathematical thinking! 🌟

Maths Y2… working with tens and ones
2D have used base ten when working on place value to compare numbers using greater then, less than and equal signs.

Addition in maths
Year 1 have been mastering different methods they can use to solve additions up to ten. We have been focusing on part whole models, number lines, ten frames and counting on in our heads.

Building confidence in Maths
Once again, year 4 we’re using CPA (concrete, pictorial and abstract) resources to support their learning.
Some of our children are finally mastering Subtraction with exchanges.
Amazingly, we have a handful of children in year 4 that have already successfully understood the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.
