Information for parents
Stockton Wood is a Restorative School. In Year 5 we use emojis to check-in to share how we are feeling and this helps us to manage our feelings.
Our learning opportunities across the curriculum develop enquiry skills, promote
reasoning and problem solving, nurture social and emotional wellbeing and
encourage your child to be independent learners underpinned by our school
values of respect, include, succeed and encourage.
Class Dojos are used to celebrate achievements and praise efforts!

Look out for our homework matrix each half-term! These activities will explore our wider curriculum, offer creative challenges and an opportunity to earn dojos!

Dyslexia Awareness
This afternoon in assembly, we discussed how dyslexia can affect different things for different people. A person with dyslexia can be good at some things but need support with other things. It is important to remember that people with dyslexia also have great strengths too and that at our school we support each other no matter what our differences are.

5D – being assertive
In PSHE this week, 5D have been discussing how to be assertive. The children explored the importance of being able to say no when they don’t want to do something, while still being polite and respectful.
They showed great maturity throughout the lesson and demonstrated a fantastic understanding of the topic. To practise their new assertiveness skills, the children wrote short scripts and performed them to the class.
I was so proud of their confidence and the way they approached the task. Well done, 5D!

5D – Royal Ballet 🩰
On Monday, we were fortunate to take part in a Zoom masterclass with the Royal Ballet. 5D threw themselves into the session and had a fantastic time! Everyone was fully engaged, and I was so proud of the class for stepping outside their comfort zones and embracing the challenge. 👏

5D – Maths party day!
Last Friday, we celebrated maths party day! In year 5, we created pixel art and calculated the size of our drawings using cm’s. We created some fantastic pieces! Well done year 5! ✍️🤩

5D – Music 🎶
5D have been learning a new spooky song in Music, they even added a ‘monster walk’ to complete their performance!

Maths Party Day🔢
We celebrated the link between art and maths by designing our very own robots using 2D shapes! We explored the area and perimeter of the different shapes while getting creative with our designs.
The children created some fantastic and imaginative robots, showing off their creativity and mathematical skills. Well done, everyone!

5D – Science experiment 🧪💧
Year 5 carried out a science experiment yesterday to investigate water resistance. The children were all engaged and worked incredibly hard throughout the activity. Their concentration and accuracy when using a stopwatch helped them to collect reliable results.
Well done, Year 5!

5D – PE 🏀🏅
In PE, Year 5 have been developing their throwing skills through a game of benchball! Everyone played brilliantly, and there was a lovely sense of sportsmanship throughout. Well done, Year 5! 👏

Being assertive
5R had a great discussion about what it means to be assertive and how to handle different situations confidently. We brought our learning to life through some role play and drama!

Hello Yellow Day
For Hello Yellow Day, 5D explored the importance of looking after our mental health and discussed different strategies to support our wellbeing. Each child wrote a positive quote, affirmation or compliment, which we brought together to create a Jar of Positivity. This special jar is filled with encouraging words that we can turn to whenever we need a little extra motivation, reassurance or a boost of positivity!

5D PSHE
Our Emotional Needs
Today, 5D created their own characters and explored how they might act in different situations. The children worked incredibly hard and came up with some really thoughtful and insightful comments. I am very proud of the maturity they showed during this activity.
Well done, 5D!

5D Hello Yellow Day 💛⭐️🌻
Today, 5D celebrated Hello Yellow Day by sharing compliments and making each other smile! Each child wrote a lovely compliment for a classmate and popped it into our compliment jar. Everyone received a thoughtful compliment, and the day ended with smiles all round! Perhaps the compliment jar should become a permanent fixture! 💛

October Black History Month
Our assembly gave us a chance to learn about the achievements, stories and contributions of Black people throughout history.
We heard about people who have overcome challenges, achieved great things and inspired others along the way.
Who inspires you?
Miss Buckingham and a team of children also put their knowledge to the test in a Black History Month quiz – they did so well that they were rated as ‘Clever clogs’! 🏆

This week, our Year 5 pupils have been celebrating Black History Month by learning about the incredible life, music and achievements of Stormzy. 🎶 The children were inspired by his journey, his determination and the positive impact he has made through his music and community work. We wrote amazing acrostic poems about his work.

5D – Computing
🎮 Learning through games! 💻
5D have been amazing in Computing this term! Before moving on to our next topic, we enjoyed some fun decoding games and internet safety activities.
The children had a fantastic time and, best of all, they were learning while having fun! 🌟🔐

5D – History
5D have worked really hard in History this week, creating comic strips about Alfred the Great and the Vikings! They worked together to collect information and then began to tell the story in their own creative way. I loved reading the finished comic strips!
