Information for Parents
Stockton Wood is a Restorative School. In Year 1 we use emojis to check-in to share how we are feeling and this helps us to manage our feelings.
The children are looking forward to a great year of learning, including listening to stories by new authors, learning outdoors, exploring the world around them as scientists and being physically active.
Class Dojos are used to celebrate achievements and praise efforts!

P.E. kit includes: a plain pale blue t-shirt, navy shorts/ jogging bottoms and a pair
of black pumps or trainers to take part in PE. Your child can come to school
wearing their P.E. kit on their class days.
General Reminders
Reading is at the heart of everything we do, so please try and read with your
child every night. Ask them questions about what they have read, encouraging them to talk about the book, whether it is a story or non-fiction. This will help them with their reading comprehension.
Your child can bring a water bottle to school, containing water only.
Look out for our homework matrix! These activities will explore our wider curriculum, offer creative challenges and an opportunity to earn dojos!

Year 1 Chatter
Science – learning about sight
This week in Science, we have been learning about sight. We answered a really tricky but important question: do our eyes need light to work? We looked closely at our own eyes in mirrors, and talked about what we could see. We then did a really fun practical activity: we had to throw 3 beans bags – one with both eyes open, one with just one eye open, and then one with both eyes closed! We kept a record of each time the bean bag went in the bucket…which do you think was the easiest to score a goal?!

We enjoyed a fantastic zoom on Monday with Chris Naylor Ballesteros! We enjoyed the story, but the tutorial to create our own version of one of the story characters was a highlight!
1B library visit
Our first library visit was super fun! We read a book together as a class and then explored our own books with friends. We are so excited to visit again next week.

1B have been learning about adding 1 more. We worked together on our maths board to add 1 more to our ten frames and concrete resources. This helped develops the children’s understanding in a hands on way before answering the questions in their book.

Year 1 RE
Today we have explored God’s creation by going outside to look closely at the world around us. We then came back inside was introduced to the creation story and thought of some adjectives so describe the God and their creation. 🌍

Year 1 Music 🎵
1B have been exploring the pulse and rhythm in music. They first practiced by using their bodies to find the pulse and rhythm before putting their skills to the test on the glockenspiels.
1B you are fantastic musicians!⭐️
Year 1 gymnastics 🤸
1B have had lots of fun developing their gymnastics skills. They practiced different movements, balanced and ways of travelling around the room.
The children are really enjoying the sessions and are excited to learn more skills.
Our first computing lesson!
We were so excited to spend time in our computer suite! We talked about the importance of passwords, and why we have them. We logged in together, and then practised our clicking skills using a mouse – we had to pop as many bubbles as we could in only 1 minute!

History Hook – our favourite toys
Our history topic this half term is all about toys from the past. To start our topic, we asked families to email photos into school of the children with their favourite toys! We explored them together, talking about the features of each toy. We finished by asking ourselves: did our parents or even grandparents have toys like this when they were younger?

Tuesday is an exciting day in 1R – not only do we have PE, but we have music as well! This week, we explored the glockenspiels.

Skills, strength and discipline – Military Martial Arts at Stockton Wood!
British Military Martial Arts, Little Soldiers / Cadets (4-11) sessions will be held in our school hall on a Friday 3:20 – 4pm.
Our children enjoyed demonstrating some of the skills taught in those sessions during today’s assembly and many of them are keen to join.

Maths today was all about 1 less than a number. We used number lines and resources to find the answers to some tricky questions. Afterwards, we had a challenge. Mrs Ritchie made a shape using 5 cubes. We had to make as many shapes as possible using 1 less cube than Mrs Ritchie had…we worked out that we were only allowed 4 cubes! We found some cool shapes that we could make with 4 cubes!

DT week – the final product
After our research and planning/designing, it was time to create our final product! We worked from our original design, and created our moving picture. Some of us even took our final product to show Mrs Clovis – she was very impressed!

Year 1 DT
1B have been busy over the past two days, practicing making their sliders and levers to make fairy tales come to life. Now it’s time for 1B to take what they have learnt and create their own moving picture, using the mechanisms they have learnt this week.
DT Week
DT week is in full flow, and today we have been experimenting with split pins to make a lever! Look how proud we are! We have also now planned and designed our final product, ready to continue with our work tomorrow and Friday. We can’t wait to share our final product!

Year 1 PE
1B had lots of fun developing their throwing and catching skills today! They worked together in teams , whilst cheering each other on. As you can see by their smiles 1B loved their first PE lesson with our sports coach.🎾😊
Year 1 maths
We have been learning how to represent objects as numbers. We worked together to count objects and used a ten frame to represent the amount. The children then went off to have a go with their partners. We are so proud of how amazing the children have started off year 1 and can see their confidence building each day. 😁
Maths – counting from a larger group
Counting from a larger group can be tricky – we can sometimes get distracted, forget which ones we’ve counted and sometimes we can even forget where we are up to. So today, we have been practising that skill, whilst also focusing on making sure that our movements match the speed of our counting.

We started our lesson today with an interactive quiz! We had to listen to 4 answers, each of them describing a character from our text Old Bear, and decide which was correct before moving to the correct zone!

English through Drama!
In our English lesson today, we had to write a sentence about how a character from our story Old Bear was feeling and why. So before we decided on a sentence, we used drama to act out some of the scenarios so we could experience how that character might feel in that moment.

We really enjoyed looking back at the self portraits we did in Reception and seeing how much progress we have made with our drawing and sketching skills!

We picked one of our friends names out of a bag, we then wrote that person a Holi card with a kind message inside to make them smile.

Great use of double sided counters to make different arrays. We talked about the number of rows, number of columns and how many altogether. Well done Year One!

Today we started ‘Digital Painting’ using a range of tools on Paintz App. Look at all our hard workers in Year One, developing their mouse skills and using digital paintbrushes, pens and shapes to create images.

We are writing up the 4 parts to our story ‘Where the wild things are’. We are working on our handwriting and presentation.
PSHE- looking after our school environment
We picked up toys and litter on the playground, we saw bikes not put neatly in the bike store, we went into the dinner hall after lunch and saw food on the floor and our memorial garden looked beautiful with all the daffodils and no litter. We talked about how we can make our school environment look lovely and what we can do to help.

World Book Day 2026
Today we watched a live world book day session on BBCiplayer. We planted a sunflower seed, read lots of books, iced a biscuit, had a cake from the birthday boy in our class and watched the Smeds and the Smoos.

Thankfulness
Today, we had Rev Phil delivering our assembly all about thankfulness. We thought about what we are thankful for and discussed how we could find something to be thankful for even when times are hard.

Key Stage 1 and Year 3 enjoyed our assembly with Rev Phil this morning. We talked about the things we are thankful for and had a sing and a dance at the end.

MHST mental health support team
Today we had a visit from 2 ladies who work for the mental health support team came to talk to us for children’s mental health week.
Internet Safety
we watched a video all about being safe on the internet. We know that we must tell a grown up if we see something we don’t like and we never talk to a stranger on our devices.

Liverpool Foundation- Feed Your Mind assembly
We all enjoyed our assembly with the Liverpool Foundation about the importance of reading. We are excited to win books from the selection donated to us by the Liverpool Foundation. Don’t forget to scan the QR code and write a review on the book you choose!

Mighty Red and Wendy came to our school to tell us the exciting news about the ‘Feed your mind’ programme.
We get to choose a book to take home and then using a QR code, we can write a review to help others to decide if they would like that book next.

KS1 Assembly
In assembly this week Mrs Clovis shared some of our school librarian’s book recommendations and then read us part of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson which we loved joining in with. We also talked about respecting each other.

Year 1 and Year 2 have been having a brilliant time making use of the new materials on the Key Stage 1 yard!
Year 5 Reading Buddies
Today we had a lovely reading buddies session, to cheer us up on this Blue Monday. Year 5 enjoyed reading with year 1. Everybody also received a book to take home to National Year of Reading.

In assembly this week, Mrs Clovis talked to KS1 about the National Year of Reading. She shared a book recommendation with us and allowed us to share our favourite authors with each other. Who is your favourite author?

We have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Jewish celebration ‘Hanukkah’ and made lovely cards to share.
PE – Christmas Tree Creations
Great PE lesson today listening and following instructions to move our bodies in different ways. Good team work skills to select equipment and decorate our Year One Christmas trees.
PSHE – It’s not fair!
Lovely circle time session discussing a range of situations and deciding if it is fair or not. We listened carefully to each other and shared our thoughts and ideas.
Hanukkah Assembly
Today, we had an assembly all about the Jewish festival- Hanukkah. We learned why it is celebrated and how it is celebrated.
Year One – Maths and Art
Today we explored 2D Shapes and sorting them in different ways. We went on a shape hunt around our class and found lots of items in our class that were 2D shapes. We then used our collage skills and created 2D shape robots.
Year One – Musical Monday
Today we joined the ‘Musical Monday Resonate Concert’ and joined in with festive songs. We discussed the various instruments being played throughout the session including; keyboard, guitar and flute.
Advent assembly with Rev Fiona
Key stage one enjoyed their assembly with Rev Fiona from All Saints Church. They learnt about advent and the meaning of Christmas.
Year One – PE
Great ball skills this week in PE. Good control displayed when toe tapping and dribbling the ball. We developed our target skills and explored different parts of the foot we need to kick the ball to reach the various targets.
Year One – Art Week
We’ve had a great week exploring mixing primary colours to make secondary colours. We thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Mix it up!’ By Herve Tullet and have explored printing using a range of objects. Look at the wonderful Teddy Bears we have created using our printing and collage skills.
Science – Objects and materials
Look at Year One learning all about objects and a range of materials. We went on a materials hunt. Look at all the objects we found in and around our classroom that are made from: wood, metal, glass, plastic, rock and fabric.

Our school council have been busy helping to shape a local woodland space. One of the many things we suggested were animal carvings to make it a welcoming and creative place for the whole community to enjoy!

School council met yesterday to launch a competition to design a logo for the Cradle to Career Project in Speke.
The Cradle to Career Project would appreciate your involvement and there will be a £40 Cineworld voucher for the winning entry (other local schools are also taking part).
Your child will need to hand in their entries to their teacher, by Friday 10th October.

Yesterday year 1 had a gorgeous day at Croxteth Farm. The children were very well behaved, our day was very busy helping to look after all of the animals. We were able to feed and touch lots of gorgeous animals as well as learn new things. We definitely have a few aspiring vets in year 1.

Year One – Celebrating Neurodiversity Week
This week we have been watching a range of video clips and learning about how we are all different. We now know that our brains work differently and is ok to think in a different way to others. Everyone is welcome in Stockton Wood.

Today we were so lucky, we got to work with an artist to make a tile with tress and buildings on. Finally we made our mouse to go on it. We have learnt so many new skills during our lesson and mostly importantly had fun.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week
A huge thank you to Mr Boyd for hanging our neurodiversity umbrellas! Neurodiversity is an umbrella term used to refer to all of the different ways of thinking. This week the children are learning about Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and Dyspraxia. Ask your child if they know any famous people who are neurodivergant!

Today in our PE lesson we started gymnastics. We have looked at different ways of moving and travelling. We moved high, low, in different directions and different speeds.

Today we read the story of ‘Pirate Mums’. As a class we discussed different types of families, we talked about families with 1 mum, 2 mums, a mum and a dad, 1 dad, 2 dads and how we are all different but we are still loved and cared for.

Today in science we planted some seeds, we are very excited to watch them grow. Today we looked at the words: flower, stem, leaf and roots.
