Information for Parents
Stockton Wood is a Restorative School. In Year 1 we use emojis to check-in to share how we are feeling and this helps us to manage our feelings.
The children are looking forward to a great year of learning, including listening to stories by new authors, learning outdoors, exploring the world around them as scientists and being physically active.
Class Dojos are used to celebrate achievements and praise efforts!

P.E. kit includes: a plain pale blue t-shirt, navy shorts/ jogging bottoms and a pair
of black pumps or trainers to take part in PE. Your child can come to school
wearing their P.E. kit on their class days.
General Reminders
Reading is at the heart of everything we do, so please try and read with your
child every night. Ask them questions about what they have read, encouraging them to talk about the book, whether it is a story or non-fiction. This will help them with their reading comprehension.
Your child can bring a water bottle to school, containing water only.
Look out for our homework matrix! These activities will explore our wider curriculum, offer creative challenges and an opportunity to earn dojos!

Year 1 Chatter
Publishing
We are writing up the 4 parts to our story ‘Where the wild things are’. We are working on our handwriting and presentation.
PSHE- looking after our school environment
We picked up toys and litter on the playground, we saw bikes not put neatly in the bike store, we went into the dinner hall after lunch and saw food on the floor and our memorial garden looked beautiful with all the daffodils and no litter. We talked about how we can make our school environment look lovely and what we can do to help.

World Book Day 2026
Today we watched a live world book day session on BBCiplayer. We planted a sunflower seed, read lots of books, iced a biscuit, had a cake from the birthday boy in our class and watched the Smeds and the Smoos.

Thankfulness
Today, we had Rev Phil delivering our assembly all about thankfulness. We thought about what we are thankful for and discussed how we could find something to be thankful for even when times are hard.
Thankfulness Assembly
Key Stage 1 and Year 3 enjoyed our assembly with Rev Phil this morning. We talked about the things we are thankful for and had a sing and a dance at the end.
Our new story
Where the wild things are.
We explored our vehicle text and acted out parts of the story. We also looked at the new vocabulary in the book.
Today we discussed some different objects found in our room
Then we had a misbehaving wolf appear, we were able to ask lots of questions.

MHST mental health support team
Today we had a visit from 2 ladies who work for the mental health support team came to talk to us for children’s mental health week.
Internet Safety
we watched a video all about being safe on the internet. We know that we must tell a grown up if we see something we don’t like and we never talk to a stranger on our devices.

Liverpool Foundation- Feed Your Mind assembly
We all enjoyed our assembly with the Liverpool Foundation about the importance of reading. We are excited to win books from the selection donated to us by the Liverpool Foundation. Don’t forget to scan the QR code and write a review on the book you choose!
Whole School assembly – LFC Foundation.
Mighty Red and Wendy came to our school to tell us the exciting news about the ‘Feed your mind’ programme.
We get to choose a book to take home and then using a QR code, we can write a review to help others to decide if they would like that book next.

Today’s lesson taught us that if you don’t like something you see on line or someone asks you to do something you need to tell someone you trust. Can your child sing you the funny tummy song?
KS1 Assembly
In assembly this week Mrs Clovis shared some of our school librarian’s book recommendations and then read us part of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson which we loved joining in with. We also talked about respecting each other.
KS1 Yard Fun!
Year 1 and Year 2 have been having a brilliant time making use of the new materials on the Key Stage 1 yard!
Year 5 Reading Buddies
Today we had a lovely reading buddies session, to cheer us up on this Blue Monday. Year 5 enjoyed reading with year 1. Everybody also received a book to take home to National Year of Reading.
Reading at Stockton Wood
In assembly this week, Mrs Clovis talked to KS1 about the National Year of Reading. She shared a book recommendation with us and allowed us to share our favourite authors with each other. Who is your favourite author?
Year One – Reading
Lovely quality time spent in our school library exploring books to read for pleasure. Then 1J voted for which book they would all like to listen to and ‘Go All In’ to celebrate the start 2026 Year of Reading.
Year One – Maths
Super problem solving and reasoning skills to find three numbers that make ten. Good use of unifix concrete resources to find more than one answer.
Year One – English
Great hot-seating of ‘Hermelin’ asking him a range of questions linked to our new class text ‘Hermelin the Detective Mouse’ by Mini Grey. Good listening and responding appropriately to each other. Good oral rehearsal of ‘I think . . .’ when sharing responses.
Year One – Maths
Great exploration of concrete resources to make our number of the week in different ways.
English -Hook
During English some very strange objects appeared. We made a prediction about what we think might happen in our new story.

Hanukkah – Year One
We have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Jewish celebration ‘Hanukkah’ and made lovely cards to share.
PE – Christmas Tree Creations
Great PE lesson today listening and following instructions to move our bodies in different ways. Good team work skills to select equipment and decorate our Year One Christmas trees.
PSHE – It’s not fair!
Lovely circle time session discussing a range of situations and deciding if it is fair or not. We listened carefully to each other and shared our thoughts and ideas.
Hanukkah Assembly
Today, we had an assembly all about the Jewish festival- Hanukkah. We learned why it is celebrated and how it is celebrated.
Year One – Maths and Art
Today we explored 2D Shapes and sorting them in different ways. We went on a shape hunt around our class and found lots of items in our class that were 2D shapes. We then used our collage skills and created 2D shape robots.
Year One – Musical Monday
Today we joined the ‘Musical Monday Resonate Concert’ and joined in with festive songs. We discussed the various instruments being played throughout the session including; keyboard, guitar and flute.
Advent assembly with Rev Fiona
Key stage one enjoyed their assembly with Rev Fiona from All Saints Church. They learnt about advent and the meaning of Christmas.
Year One – PE
Great ball skills this week in PE. Good control displayed when toe tapping and dribbling the ball. We developed our target skills and explored different parts of the foot we need to kick the ball to reach the various targets.
Year One – Art Week
We’ve had a great week exploring mixing primary colours to make secondary colours. We thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Mix it up!’ By Herve Tullet and have explored printing using a range of objects. Look at the wonderful Teddy Bears we have created using our printing and collage skills.
Science – Objects and materials
Look at Year One learning all about objects and a range of materials. We went on a materials hunt. Look at all the objects we found in and around our classroom that are made from: wood, metal, glass, plastic, rock and fabric.
Year One – Exploring ideas through role-play
Great partner work today using ‘Mine Time’ to explore bossy words to mine instructional sentences.
Milo’s Money – Year One
We have been discussing ‘Where does money come from?’ Look at all our wonderful ideas.
Maths – Year One
We have been busy problem solving and reasoning using our addition and subtraction skills.
Year One – Music
Great concert this afternoon for ‘Musical Monday’ via zoom. Lots of clapping, swaying keeping to the beat by Year One.
Geography – Year One
We have enjoyed learning all about where we live in the world. We explored globes and atlases to locate Europe, UK and Liverpool.
Sentence Accuracy
Great use our writing toolkit during English to help edit our sentences. We love using purple pens to edit our work!
Maths-finding a part
We had 10 counters, one partner hid some counters in their hand, the other partner had to work out how many counters were in their hand.

During English we had to act like a witch, Rapunzel and the witch cutting Rapunzels hair.

Design Technology – Year One
Today we shared our final ‘Moving Pictures’ with Reception. They really enjoyed exploring the sliders and watching the characters move.
Science – Year One
We have been exploring our senses in Year One this half term. We really enjoyed our investigations especially when we used our sense of smell to smell various items. How many did you guess correctly?

School Council – Community space
Our school council have been busy helping to shape a local woodland space. One of the many things we suggested were animal carvings to make it a welcoming and creative place for the whole community to enjoy!
Remember to look out for them around All Saints Church, as the area is further developed.
School Council – Competition
School council met yesterday to launch a competition to design a logo for the Cradle to Career Project in Speke.
The Cradle to Career Project would appreciate your involvement and there will be a £40 Cineworld voucher for the winning entry (other local schools are also taking part).
Your child will need to hand in their entries to their teacher, by Friday 10th October.
Year One
Year One have enjoyed the return to school and seeing all of their friends again. They have been sharing their summer news, taking turns when playing, practising counting skills and creating self portraits!

Musical Monday
Lovely interactive performance this afternoon listening to Alex and Archie playing the violin and accordion.
Croxteth Farm
Yesterday year 1 had a gorgeous day at Croxteth Farm. The children were very well behaved, our day was very busy helping to look after all of the animals. We were able to feed and touch lots of gorgeous animals as well as learn new things. We definitely have a few aspiring vets in year 1.

We’ve throughly enjoyed a fabulous day at Croxteth Farm. We fed lots of hungry animals, groomed the ponies and stroked the bunny rabbits and guinea pigs.
Drama- Aspirations week
Carrie came in to speak about drama on Friday. She brought in props for the children to use and lines for them to act out using expression.

We’ve had a great afternoon with our special visitor Carrie. Carrie shared her experience of being an actress and all the fantastic parts that are involved her job. We got to try on some costumes and read some lines aloud.

Aspirations Week
Year 1, 2 and 3 are off to a great start to our Aspirations week today. We all got together to talk about what we wanted to be when we grow up.

Author Visit
Such a lovely time today with our visiting Author Luke Temple. We listened carefully to different extracts from three of his books and asked a range of questions. Which book would you like to read in full?

Sports Day
Year 1 had a beautiful sports day yesterday in the sunshine. We took part in a running race, egg and spoon, sack and water race. Thank you to all the parents that supported us and were there to cheer us on.

Mental Health Week – Year One
Lovely listening to mindfulness music and colouring with our friends to relax and unwind at the end of a busy school day.

Good research skills displayed in class today. Good discussion work all about the difference between fruit and vegetables. We now know which fruit grows on trees, bushes and vines.

Year One – Celebrating Neurodiversity Week
This week we have been watching a range of video clips and learning about how we are all different. We now know that our brains work differently and is ok to think in a different way to others. Everyone is welcome in Stockton Wood.
Art- clay
Today we were so lucky, we got to work with an artist to make a tile with tress and buildings on. Finally we made our mouse to go on it. We have learnt so many new skills during our lesson and mostly importantly had fun.

Super skills displayed whilst exploring the mass of objects. Good use of ‘lighter and heavier’ vocabulary when comparing the mass of classroom objects.
Neurodiversity Celebration Week
A huge thank you to Mr Boyd for hanging our neurodiversity umbrellas! Neurodiversity is an umbrella term used to refer to all of the different ways of thinking. This week the children are learning about Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and Dyspraxia. Ask your child if they know any famous people who are neurodivergant!

Its lovely to see our year 1 children saving money each week. Our year 6 cashiers are doing a great job.
Gymnastics
Today in our PE lesson we started gymnastics. We have looked at different ways of moving and travelling. We moved high, low, in different directions and different speeds.
LGBTQ+ week
Today we read the story of ‘Pirate Mums’. As a class we discussed different types of families, we talked about families with 1 mum, 2 mums, a mum and a dad, 1 dad, 2 dads and how we are all different but we are still loved and cared for.
Winter Planting
Today in science we planted some seeds, we are very excited to watch them grow. Today we looked at the words: flower, stem, leaf and roots.
Stay and Learn
Year 1 had a lovely time learning all about the history of St Valentine. We had fun with some Valentines maths problems too! Thank you to all our families for coming along!

We’ve had a fun filled afternoon learning all about the history of St Valentine and used our problem solving skills to solve calculations using numbers up to 20.
Internet Safety – Year One
Excellent internet safety session today learning all about ‘Trusted Adults.’

Today we have been learning how to use a tennis racket 🎾 we had to balance the ball on the racket and get to the other side of the room.
