Black History Month – Floella Benjamin

We have been busy learning more about Black History Month today. We started our day with a fantastic live assembly with Swarzy, who talked about belonging to different communities. We followed this by looking closely at Floella Benjamin and read her amazing story ‘Going to England’. We had a fantastic discussion about how Floella will have felt at different points in her life: when her Dad left Trinidad for London, living without him for a long time, then Mum following and living without either of her parents, then packing up a few belongings and moving to London. Then we focussed on how people in London initially treated her family, based on the colour of their skin. This made us incredibly sad 😔 we then thought about what things we would take in a small suitcase if we were moving to a different place.
